Historically, Unesa was founded in 1950 as  the Institute of Teacher Training and Education Surabaya (Indonesian: Institute Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan IKIP). In accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science no. 182/1964 on 19 December 1964, IKIP Surabaya officially established with one presidium. Thus, it is established as the date of the anniversary of IKIP Surabaya. From 1964 to 1977. In accordance with the Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia no. 93/1999 on August 4, 1999, IKIP Surabaya transformed into Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa)/ state University of Surabaya. Now Unesa has 9  faculties and a post graduate school. They are (1) Faculty of Languages and Arts (2) Faculty of  Sports Sciences (3) Faculty of Education Sciences (4) Faculty of Economics and Businesses (5) Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (6) Faculty of Engineering (7) Faculty of Social Sciences and Law (8) Faculty of Vocation (9) Faculty of Medicine
